Science of Reading (SOR)

Empower your educators with evidence-based, resource-agnostic workshops designed to bridge the gap between literacy research and classroom practice. Our half-day (3.5 hour) intensives provide the technical "keys" to the code for PK–5 instruction.

Sounds to Symbols: Mastering Phonological & Phonemic Awareness

  • Focus on the "Word Recognition" side of Scarborough’s Rope, moving students from phonological proficiency to automaticity.

  • Technical training in precise phoneme articulation, mouth placement, and "pure sound" modeling to prevent blending errors.

  • Implementation of high-impact routines like Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping, Elkonin Boxes, and the Heart Word Method.

  • Diagnostic strategies for Tier 1 core instruction and Tier 2/3 intensive intervention for students with dyslexia or phonological core deficits.

Bridging the Rope: Mastering Vocabulary & Comprehension

  • Deep dive into the "Language Comprehension" strands: Vocabulary, Oral Language, Syntactic Awareness, and Metacognition.

  • Explicit instruction in the 6-Step Vocabulary Routine and Frayer Model to move students toward deep conceptual mastery.

  • Practical tools for self-monitoring, including the "Click or Clunk" routine and Depth of Knowledge (DOK) questioning guides.

  •

"Double-Duty" Instruction: Techniques for integrating ELA routines into Science and Social Studies to build vital background knowledge.

Writing Mastery: Mechanics to Meaning

  • Instructional coaching through the "Writing Rope," moving from Transcription (manual letter formation) to Generation (composition).

  • Mastery of sentence-level syntax through Kernel Sentence Expansion and the "Because, But, So" reasoning method.

  • Explicit organizational frameworks for Narrative, Informational, and Opinion writing, including the OREO Method and POW + TREE model.

  • Specialized multisensory scaffolds (e.g., "Wet-Dry-Try") to support struggling writers and students with dysgraphia.

SOR Delivery & Implementation Support

  • Flexible Format: All sessions are available in-person at your district or as live (synchronous) virtual workshops.

  •

Dual-Expert Model: Large cohorts (41–100 participants) utilize both Dr. Deanna Dobbins and Brandy Wheeler to ensure a high-quality 1:50 facilitator-to-teacher ratio for real-time feedback.

  •

The SOR Strategy Toolkit: Every participant receives digital access to a 20-page toolkit containing ready-to-use classroom organizers, scripts, and diagnostic maps.

  •

Sustainability: Optional extension cycles include "Reading Lab" observations and data-analysis sessions to ensure long-term fidelity and collective efficacy.
